Orthodontic correction is not just about straightening teeth, its about bringing the jaws, surrounding muscles, joints and the teeth in harmony with each other. If this doesn’t happen, it leads to several complications in the future like Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, Facial Pain, Headaches, Back pain, Neck Pain and even relapse of the straightened teeth which inturn affects your daily lifestyle.

How do I know if I need Orthodontics?

Whether or not Orthodontics is recommended for you at your age depends on a lot of diagnostic tools. A complete medical and dental examination, special radiographs, teeth models and photographs are necessary for the clinician to guide you through the entire treatment plan which is right for You. However, if You have any of the following, you may be the candidate for orthodontics:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crowding
  • Overall Spacing or Midline diastema
  • Openbite
  • Crossbite
  • Parafunctional habits

Inorder to gain maximum out of the orthodontic correction, it is always beneficial to start as early as possible. All the above mentioned malocclusions have a tendency to develop early in the growth period of a child. If caught young, they can be easily intercepted and an unfavourable pattern of growth and development of jaws and teeth can be redirected towards a favourable path. However, left untreated through adulthood, it becomes quite difficult to treat the entire unit of jaw bones, Jaw Joints(TMJ), muscles and teeth together towards a favourable pattern, leading to the development of Joint disorders in the future.

Interceptive Orthodontics in Children

At Oraface, we believe in the phrase, “Catch Them Young”. Every teeth in our mouth right from our childhood to adult has a specific role to play. There is a reason why there are particular timings allowed by the nature for each tooth to erupt and shed in our mouth. All these are related to the growth timings of our body. Disharmony in these timings due to early loss of milk teeth or late eruption of primary/permanent teeth or genetic and environmental factors may lead to the development of crooked teeth or insufficient development of jaws.

Certain parafunctional habits in children like Thumb sucking, Tongue thrusting, Mouth Breathing, Nail Biting etc. when persisting over a certain age leads to the development of skeletal and dental defects.

All these, when, detected at early growth stages of a child and intercepted at right age, would prevent them from developing severe malocclusions in future which may even require surgical correction at times.

How does the Orthodontic treatment work?

An orthodontic treatment comprises of Braces and Functional appliances to alter the growth of the jaws and the muscles simultaneously wile moving teeth to its desirable position.
According to your need, the orthodontic treatment may either comprise of just Braces or the combination of braces and functional appliances. Depending on the type of malocclusion you have, the treatment duration may vary from 6 months to 2.5 years.

Braces: consists of bands, wires and brackets which are usually fixed onto the teeth surface to move the teeth using the forces of the wire to its desirable location. Removable/Fixed functional appliances: These appliances are prescribed in the growing period of the child, to utilise the growth of the jaws and modify it towards more favourable pattern, thus correcting the alignment of teeth and harmonising it with other facial structures. These appliances may include:
  • Habit Breaking Appliances
  • Special removable appliances
  • Jaw Expanders

Oral Care during Orthodontic treatment

  • Brush Your teeth regularly, minimum twice daily.
  • Use Mouthwash after every meal
  • Floss regularly after toothbrushing
  • Use dentist prescribed Proxa brushes for cleaning under the braces

Maintenance of Oral Hygiene is extremely important specially while undergoing orthodontic treatment. You need to take special care of your teeth while you are on your braces. It might be possible, that a lot of times food might get stuck in between your braces and if not cleaned regularly and properly will lead to cavities and failure of the ongoing orthodontic treatment.
